Ten Free Agents That Could Still Make a League One Move This Season

Chris Martin

Chris Martin is a 37-year-old centre-forward who has spent most of his career in the Championship, with a long, prolific spell at Derby County after coming through at Norwich City.

He joined Norwich as a 10-year-old, broke into the first team in 2006–07, then went out on a season-long loan to Luton Town in 2008–09 where he scored regularly despite the club starting the campaign on a huge points deduction. After returning to Norwich he was part of the side that won promotion from League One in 2009–10 and then went up again from the Championship in 2010–11, but he found chances limited in the Premier League era and had loans at Crystal Palace and Swindon Town before a short Derby County loan in early 2013.

Derby signed him permanently in summer 2013 and he became their main striker, hitting 25 goals in all competitions in 2013–14 and remaining a key scorer across several seasons. A 2016–17 loan to Fulham became a saga because the deal included an expectation of a permanent move that later became disputed, with Derby trying to bring him back and Fulham insisting he stayed put. After later loans at Reading and Hull City, he left Derby in 2020 for Bristol City, then had a short stint at QPR, before joining Bristol Rovers in September 2023. He scored 21 league goals across two League One seasons with Rovers, but injuries badly affected his 2024–25 campaign and he stayed with the club afterwards to continue rehabilitation even when his contract was not renewed.
