This was tough to take. Whitehawk were flying high in the National League South, but we’d already knocked Tranmere out after a replay in qualifying. A tie away at a side in a lower division felt like a chance to progress.
We went 2-0 down, only for Matt Rhead to grab one back. Sam Deering made it 3-1, and after another Rhead goal, Dave Martin made it 4-2. In the 90th minute, Rhead added another, Deering added another and Alan Power was sent off.
The Hawks, who wanted to be renamed Brighton City, drew in their next game with Dagenham, and the winners of a reply knew they’d face Everton in the Third Round. They lost 3-2 after extra time.
