Matt Smith (Man City)
Matt Smith is an odd one – he’s had some high-profile loans at QPR and Twente, but last season took in Doncaster Rovers, as if he was on a downward trajectory. I’m not sure if that means he is going to get a Championship move next year, or whether he might be available to the likes of us.
If it is the latter, he’d be a great signing, although as a central midfielder he might be surplus to our actual requirements. He played in a variety of central midfield positions for Doncaster last season and I thought he looked excellent, certainly in the first game against them. He impressed Wales too, he’s off to Euro 2020 and Brennan Johnson is not. If he does well there, he’ll be heading to the Championship, but if not, you never know.
