John Burridge
UEFA Cup (1992/93)
Researching this was a big ask – he’s had more clubs than a Vegas Blackjack table. Still, I did find that veteran goalkeeper Burridge featured in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup with Hibernian, playing against Belgian giants Anderlecht. He had previously been at Aston Villa during their 1977/78 UEFA Cup run, but did not feature for the Valiants, kept out of the side by Jimmy Rimmer.
Known for his eccentric personality and remarkable longevity, Burridge’s career spanned more than 750 games across 29 clubs. His short stay at Lincoln City came in 1993/94 when he joined the club as emergency cover, adding yet another name to his extensive career list. Though he only made four appearances for the Imps, Burridge remains one of the most travelled and unique players to have ever passed through the club.
John Fashanu
UEFA Cup (1994/95)
John Fashanu did feature in the UEFA Cup for Aston Villa during the 1994/95 season, appearing in their first-round tie against Turkish side Trabzonspor. Although Villa were eliminated on away goals after a 2–2 aggregate draw, it was a brief but notable European outing for the powerful centre-forward.
Fashanu had a short and successful stint with City early in his career, joining from Norwich City in the late 1970s. While he didn’t leave a lasting legacy at Sincil Bank, he did earn us £55,000 as he moved to Millwall. His later success with Wimbledon and his European cameo with Villa add him to the elite group of former Imps to play continental football.
