Dave Cameron
UEFA Cup (2007/08)
Another surprise, right? Dave Cameron featured in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup for Rhyl, appearing in their qualifying round against Finnish side FC Haka. While the Welsh side were beaten over two legs, it marked a significant moment in Cameron’s varied career, which included spells in both Scotland and the English lower leagues.
Cameron arrived at Lincoln City in 2000, signed by Alan Buckley after appearing for Brighton & Hove Albion (via Worthing). His time at Sincil Bank was unremarkable, nine league goals in 69 outings, but his robust centre-forward style was typical of the era. His later European appearance with Rhyl adds a curious postscript to his journeyman career.
Dave Phillips
UEFA Cup (1995/96)
Welsh international Dave Phillips featured in the 1995/96 UEFA Cup with Nottingham Forest, playing in a rare European adventure for the club. Of course, had English clubs not been banned from Europe, he would have made a 1988 Cup Winners’ Cup appearance courtesy of Coventry City (that feels like a whole other article).
Phillips was a seasoned top-flight performer, having previously played for the likes of Manchester City and Norwich. His connection to Lincoln City came later in his career when he joined the club in 1999. Though his spell at Sincil Bank was relatively short and came during a transitional period for the Imps, Phillips brought top-level pedigree and international experience.
Not that it showed as he entered his twilight years.
