1995
That’s right, Gary Megson was once an Imp.
He played for Manchester City, Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle United, then had three seasons in the Premier League with Norwich City before moving to the Imps. Sam Ellis doubtless hoped his experience would be telling, but it wasn’t. Megson played a couple of games, and on August 25th, 1995, he was gone.
You have to wonder what the conversation was. “We’re shit, and you’ll soon be sacked, Sam” might have been the theme. If it was, Megson was right.
He played twice more for Shrewsbury before taking over as manager of Norwich City in December 1995. If only he’d stayed, he might have got Ellis’ job. I wonder what might have been, as he was a half-decent manager, twice taking West Brom to the Premier League.
Speaking of decent managers…..
