On This Day: Cup Shocks, Player Exits and Money Troubles

1988

Injuries, they happen all the time.

Before the season had kicked off in 1988, we’d already lost one of our players to injury – Tony James. He got injured in a friendly, which likely would have fired up social media, had there been such a thing at the time.

We fluffed our lines on our Football League return, losing 1-0 to Hartlepool. Luckily, James was back the following week, starting on the bench but then forcing his way into the team. He later moved to Leicester, scored the goal that kept them in the Second Division and won Player of the Season before a broken leg the following October.

After that, he never quite reached the heights his form promised.
