1998
Poor old John Reames. He was treated like a modern-day Gilbert Blades but was anything but. He butted heads with supporters on many occasions, and in 1998, he was defending the ticket prices at the club.
Remember, this was a season in which we were back in the Third Tier for the first time since 1985/86. We had Fulham, Stoke, Manchester City and Reading to visit, and away support was increasing as a result. Still, prices were regarded as too high, and attendances hadn’t increased significantly. Just 3355 came to the fixture against Wigan, our first at the new level, compared to an average support of 3968 the year before.
The average did creep above 4,000 by the end of the season, but those fans watched us get relegated anyway.
