On This Day: Cup Shocks, Player Exits and Money Troubles

1986

Ah, 1986/87. A season intrinsically linked with ‘that cartoon Imp’ badge, which did have me chuckling on social media. It was a season that first saw a fresh-faced little ginger called Gary on the terraces, and it all started so well.

There are two clippings here, one from a strong start that saw us roll Colchester over on the opening day and another awarding an Imps stalwart, Bert Loxley, the role of assistant manager. Bert was always Mr. Lincoln City to me growing up, a man my grandad admired greatly.

Gary Lund was a player I admired greatly; sadly, he dropped off after Christmas, as did City. We were play-off challengers going into the festive period, relegated on the final day.
