On This Day: Cup Shocks, Player Exits and Money Troubles

1993

I do like headlines like this, and 30 years ago (how the fcuk is it 30 years), we were on the cup trail again. Port Vale was a bloody tough draw, and we’d gone there and grabbed two away goals. That meant a tie against them at the Bank was crucial – a draw and a clean sheet ensured progression.

I wasn’t there, but imagine when we conceded a third-minute penalty. Imagine when Mike Pollitt saved that penalty. I believe today the words would be ‘limbs’. Urgh.

Everton were our third-round opponents, and perhaps someone might have been tempted to roll out the Alexander the Great headline for the manager. Perhaps.
