It’s time for another roundup of the headlines in League One this evening.
Unsurprisingly, a player punching a fan has to be the top story for you!
Cardiff City Fan Punched by James McClean Before Wrexham Cup Clash
Wrexham winger James McClean has admitted to punching a Cardiff City supporter in the players’ car park before last week’s Carabao Cup fourth-round tie between the two Welsh clubs. The 36-year-old, who was an unused substitute in the 2–1 defeat, claimed he acted in self-defence after being confronted by four Bluebirds fans upon arrival at the Racecourse Ground.
In a statement sent to talkSPORT host Jim White, McClean said he was verbally abused by the group before one individual “made a hostile move” towards him.
“I wasn’t waiting for him to make the first swing, so I did,” he explained. “Four men, one of me. People need to understand just because we play football doesn’t mean they can take liberties without their actions having consequences.”
Wrexham confirmed that the incident was reported to the relevant authorities, though North Wales Police are not currently investigating. Club officials have since declined further comment.
Cardiff City supporters have expressed surprise and frustration at the revelations, though the club itself has remained silent on the matter. The clash added an unsavoury backdrop to what was otherwise a spirited all-Welsh tie, which the League One side went on to win thanks to Will Fish’s decisive goal.
