Steve Sherwood
Steve Sherwood began his career with Chelsea, coming through the youth ranks and making his first-team debut in 1971. During the mid-1970s he gained experience on loan, most notably at Brentford where he played every league game of the 1974–75 season and was voted Supporters’ Player of the Year.
In 1976 he joined Watford, where he enjoyed the most successful period of his career under Graham Taylor. He made over 200 league appearances across 11 years, was part of the side that rose through the divisions, and played in the 1984 FA Cup final against Everton. Remarkably, he also scored a goal for Watford against Coventry City in 1984, one of the rare occasions of a goalkeeper finding the net.
Sherwood later played more than 180 games for Grimsby Town before short spells at Northampton Town and Lincoln City. He joined the Imps in 1994, making seven league appearances in the 1994–95 season. He joined City under Sam Ellis as cover for Andy Leaning and ended up making seven appearances keeping three clean sheets. His City debut came when he replaced the injured Leaning midway through a game at Wigan, it was the first time a City goalkeeper had been replaced by another goalkeeper in a Football League match.
On his arrival at Sincil Bank, manager Sam Ellis said; “Steve Sherwood has done well for us since he joined as cover for Andy Leaning on deadline day. Steve would not have expected to be thrust into the first team so quickly, but he has performed admirably in goal for us over the last couple of games.”
Managed to squeeze another couple of seasons out of his career with Gateshead after leaving City in the summer of 1995.
