I do love this award, and if you’ve not read up on what it is, please do. It basically awards the player who scored more goals than their xG suggested they should. Now, you either see xG as a good indicator of scoring opportunity, or like 90% of my readers (Jack and Pete included), you think it’s horse shit. Well, whatever.

Last year, Anthony Scully outscored his xG, which meant his goals tally was higher than the stat suggested it should be. He did the same again this season, with 15 goals and an xG of 12.96. Morgan Whittaker did well on the metric as well; he scored five, from xG of 3.50.

Five players underperformed by more than one goal; Lasse Sorensen, Regan Poole, Joe Walsh, Hakeeb Aelakun and Liam Cullen, with the latter scoring once from an xG of 6.14. However, the clear winner this season, was Lewis Fiorini.

He bagged six goals, but his xG suggested 3,66, so either three or four. That means he made more of the chances he had than he should have done, striking several from outside the area. You might not rate the stat, but it does give you an indication of the players with a bit of flair and a penchant for the unexpected. Whittaker, Scully, Ted Bishop and Fiorini made up the top four; all players with something special in their locker.
