If Sunderland do go up, they won’t be sorry to see the back of Lincoln City. We’ve had some terrific tussles with them, from play-off games to EFL Trophy semi-finals, and one of the finest came earlier in the year. You know how the 1953 FA Cup Final was called the Matthews Final? Well, this League One clash will always been known as the Maguire game. It was perhaps the only one he really turned up for, but boy, did he turn up. It wasn’t all about him though; Michael Appleton got the tactics spot on, and a committed and energetic Lincoln worked their socks off for 90 minutes. It was a tantalising glimpse at what we could be like, if only we’d turned up every week.
