Team of the Decade – Part Two (Midfield & Attack)

Striker – Davide Somma

I’ve gone right back to the beginning of the decade for this one and I’ll confess I changed my mind at last minute. I had gone for Ben Tomlinson at first, but after sleeping on it I’ve changed over to the Leeds United man.

‘It’s Somma time’ he declared in a radio interview not long after arriving and for 14 games he revolutionised our play. He bagged nine in a loan spell earning him the leading scorer accolade and, let us be honest, he kept us in League Two at the same time.

He signed on loan from Leeds and immediately earned the Imps a point against Crewe with a debut goal. After a couple of games, he really began to fire earning a draw at Dagenham (1-1) and scoring twice to earn a win away at Torquay (3-2). In effect, his goals were the difference between staying up or going down.

He was perhaps the best thing manager Chris Sutton did and the outspoken pundit was quick to enthuse about his new striker in his March programme notes for a clash with Northampton; “Since Davide has come in he’s not just scored goals he’s offering us so much more in terms of his link up play and awareness. He offers a genuine goal threat. The one thing he can do is finish but there’s still parts of his game, by his own admission, he can work on and I’m confident I can help him with his game.”

Maybe Sutton did help him; Somma later played three games for South Africa, bagging once.

  1. One player that is always massively over looked is Adrian Pătulea he only scored about 17 goals I think 12 in the league but the manager at the time Peter Jackson normally played him as a sub for 20-30 minutes.
Adrian scored more goals per minute on the pitch than any other player of all time for Lincoln.

But he may not be classed as this decade as it was 2009.

Obviously you would have to include Yeo but not sure if the two would be suited to play together in this formation.
