What I urge anyone to do before judging these choices on their past achievements is consider many other elements. Those who opt to Google Parker will see a ‘striker’ with not many goals on his record. For some ‘experts’ that’s enough to rule out value to the squad.

Football is all about goals, but individuals are not, not all the time. For instance, Rheady didn’t have a great goals ratio when we signed him, but he turned out alright, right?

Parker is a 28-year-old who fits a couple of criteria. He can play on the wing or through the centre, one of the main reasons he hasn’t been as prolific as perhaps he could have been. He’s got experience of League One as well, both with Gillingham whom he enjoyed his best spell in front of goal, as well as Charlton.

He’s had a unique career path, going from Red Star Belgrade to Aberdeen, then to Gillingham via Wealdstone. 

He’s likely to be released in the summer, he joined the Addicks on a six-month deal but has started twice and come from the bench eleven times.

I could see him behind Akinde, also able to push into a conventional 4-4-2 and play the Matt Green role. He can also fill in out wide, which would give us another option in the dying stages of a game.
