League One Latest: Exeter City Hit by Surprise Departure, Plymouth Argyle Left In Limbo

Plymouth Argyle still in the dark over Vertu Trophy quarter-final

Plymouth Argyle remain uncertain over their Vertu Trophy quarter-final opponents just one week before the tie is scheduled to take place.

Argyle are due to play either Luton Town or Swindon Town, but the EFL has yet to confirm the outcome of disciplinary proceedings following Swindon’s round of 16 win at Luton on January 13.

Swindon were charged with alleged breaches of regulations relating to the fielding of ineligible players, including Ollie Clarke, who was serving a suspension, and Aaron Drinan, who featured despite not being named on the official team sheet.

While the FA has since issued sanctions relating to Clarke, there has still been no clarity from the EFL on how the wider situation will be resolved, leaving Argyle in limbo with travel plans and preparation both affected.

The lack of certainty is far from ideal for Argyle’s coaching staff, who are trying to manage a busy run of fixtures either side of the cup tie, and it also leaves supporters unable to commit to attending the match, whether it is eventually staged at Kenilworth Road or the County Ground.

With a place in the semi-finals at stake and Wembley just two wins away, the continued silence only adds to frustration around the handling of the situation.
