League One Latest: Exeter City Hit by Surprise Departure, Plymouth Argyle Left In Limbo

Exeter City chairman Richard Pym resigns after four months

Exeter City chairman Richard Pym has resigned from his role less than four months after returning to St James Park, prompting another period of transition at the fan-owned club.

Pym stepped back into the role in October as Exeter grappled with the consequences of overspending last season, including loans totalling around £600,000 from the Supporters’ Trust, which owns the club. His return was framed as a stabilising move during a financially sensitive period.

During his brief tenure, Pym played a central role in easing immediate cashflow pressures. Most notably, he negotiated the early receipt of deferred transfer income owed to the club following Jay Stansfield’s £15m move to Birmingham City in the summer of 2024, a move that was seen internally as vital breathing space.

Speaking at a fans’ forum last month, Pym warned that without further player sales, Exeter could be forced to cut their playing budget by as much as £1.5m next season as the club attempted to operate within tighter limits.

In a statement released by the club, Exeter paid tribute to his contribution, saying his expertise had helped place the club on a more stable financial footing. His work was said to include finalising agreements for deferred transfer payments, planning further loan support and proposing a Rights Issue aimed at increasing Trust shareholding while allowing new investment.

Former Supporters’ Trust chairman Laurence Overend has been appointed on an interim basis while the process of identifying a new chair begins, with supporters once again seeking clarity and stability off the pitch.
