Jeff Hughes

Hughes’ Football League career began in earnest at Sincil Bank, where he arrived from hometown club Larne in 2005. A product of the Ballymena United and Larne academies, Hughes had initially operated as a left back, but under John Schofield he developed into a dynamic and versatile wide player, capable of operating as a wing back or further forward on the left.
Hughes made an immediate impact at Sincil Bank, combining energy, intelligence and an eye for goal. Over two seasons, he made more than 60 league appearances, scoring eight times, and became a key figure in Lincoln’s fourth successive play-off campaign. His defining moment came in the 2007 semi-final against Bristol Rovers, where he scored three goals across the two legs, despite City ultimately suffering another play-off defeat. Those performances underlined his growing reputation and attracted interest from higher levels.
That summer, Hughes moved on to Championship side Crystal Palace, bringing his Lincoln spell to a close having firmly established himself as a reliable and technically strong Football League midfielder.
After leaving City, Hughes enjoyed a lengthy career with Bristol Rovers, Notts County, Fleetwood Town and Tranmere Rovers, before returning to Larne. He played a central role in the club’s rise to domestic success, winning league titles and cups, before retiring in 2023 and moving into a youth development role.
