Wigan Battle Illness Before Key FA Cup Test

Wigan Athletic have been hit by a sickness outbreak that kept head coach Ryan Lowe away from training, with Glenn Whelan stepping in to lead preparation for the FA Cup tie against Barrow.

Several players, including in-form midfielder Callum Wright, have also been affected in a week that features three matches.

Whelan says staff have had to balance workload, fitness monitoring and illness management while preparing for opponents who arrive without pressure.

“The gaffer’s not been about today, but we have been in contact regarding preparation. There will be no excuses come Saturday if we do not get the job done,” Whelan said.

Wigan expect to field their strongest available side as they aim to reach round three and maintain positive momentum.
