Paul Dobson
The issue here would have been two-fold. Firstly, Paul Dobson was the player whose goal sent the Imps into the GMVC in 1987. Okay, it was actually our own freefall, but he scored the Torquay United goal that kept them up. Then, in 1991, we signed him.
Imagine the outcry!
That wouldn’t be where it ended. Dobson had a decent scoring record, with four goals from four starts in 1991/92, and even as we struggled to score, he couldn’t get a game. His signing was branded a ‘mistake’ and he was eventually given a free transfer.
There were rumours he wasn’t a ‘team player’, and I can only imagine the furore he’d cause on social media now. Fans would cry out for him to be given a chance, unless they still harboured resentment over that Torquay goal. Those rumours of not being a team player would have the rose-tinted supporters backing the club as well.
Social media carnage in the making.
