Cardiff fear a serious Colwill injury after Northampton victory
Cardiff City are braced for bad news over Rubin Colwill’s ankle problem after the playmaker limped out of the win at Northampton Town, with boss Brian Barry-Murphy outlining his concerns to Wales Online.
The Wales international was forced off after just 20 minutes at Sixfields and later left the ground on crutches. Barry-Murphy confirmed Colwill has suffered ankle ligament damage and admitted the early signs suggest a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
“On first glance it looks pretty serious,” he said. “The nature of the injury suggests it will not be short term. I think Rubin will be out for a period for sure.”
Colwill has been one of Cardiff’s most influential players this season, starting every league game and driving their promotion push. His departure did not derail the Bluebirds on the day, with goals from Joel Colwill and Chris Willock, plus an Ethan Wheatley own goal, sending them back to the top of League One.
There was also a scare when Joel Colwill went off with a knee gash, although Barry-Murphy expects him to return quickly. The manager praised his side’s mentality in testing conditions and acknowledged that, after recently welcoming back a near fully fit squad, the loss of Rubin underlined how quickly circumstances can change in a demanding campaign.
