Are We Really Always Rubbish At Christmas?

We got a couple of wins over Christmas in 2014. It started badly, losing 2-1 to Kidderminster, but we put three past Alfreton on Boxing Day (pictured above).

Between Christmas and New Year came the Charlie Adams goal that saw off the Cods. The 4-1 win against Barnet was a little too late to be classed as Christmas on January 4th, but it was another big win.

Four years in a row without a Christmas win. I almost gave up on Christianity.

Not quite as easily as we gave up against Halifax on December 28th, losing 5-1. Grimsby took their regular Boxing Day points, meaning a 1-1 draw with them on New Year’s Day was our only point.

I just realised how much I hated Grimsby back then. We did get two points from three matches in 2012 under Holdsworth, but lost 4-1 to the Cods on Boxing Day. A 1-1 draw after we shared two goals with Gateshead salvaged something, but it was the third year in a row we didn’t win at all over Christmas.

Christmas went badly wrong, again, in our first season out of the Football League.

Just two matches, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, but both were against Grimsby, as we lost both, 3-1 and 2-0. Urgh.

Winter decimated our calendar over Christmas. We lost 5-0 to Bury on November 23rd, and didn’t get back on the pitch until New Year’s Day, when we lost 2-1 to Bradford City.

Two days later, Northampton beat us 2-1 as well, giving us no points over Christmas. No shocker that we were relegated at the end of the season.
