Phil Stant
Cup Winners’ Cup (1993/94)
Phil Stant took part in the 1993/94 Cup Winners’ Cup with Cardiff City, playing in their tie against Polish side Katowice. Though Cardiff were eliminated in the first round, it marked a significant achievement in Stant’s career, capping off his remarkable rise from non-league football to the European stage.
He is, of course, far better remembered at Lincoln City, where he became a cult hero across two spells. His first spell saw a proven goalscorer arrive and struggle, with manager Allan Clarke famously asking Stant what his strengths were when he arrived. His second spell was better, part of John Beck’s side, he became known for his power, bravery, and goal-scoring instinct.
Tommy Tynan
Cup Winners’ Cup (1980/81)
Before becoming a cult hero at Plymouth Argyle, striker Tommy Tynan played for Newport County in the 1980/81 European Cup Winners’ Cup. Years earlier, Tynan had started out with Liverpool but never made a senior appearance; it was only later that he found his way to Lincoln City in a brief spell in the late seventies.
Although his time at Sincil Bank was fleeting, it became the stuff of legends thanks to his love of taxi journeys. His brush with European action, while short-lived, remains one of the more obscure connections between Lincoln City and continental football.
