Lincoln City Players Who Featured In European Cup Winners Cup

Mark Sertori

Cup Winners’ Cup (1990/91)

If I love the Gilligan entry, then I really love finding out Mark ‘Carlo’ Sertori featured in the 1990/91 Cup Winners’ Cup for Wrexham. He was part of the side that famously defeated Danish champions Lyngby before bowing out to Manchester United in the second round. It was a huge moment in the club’s history and provided Sertori with the opportunity to play on the European stage.

He later played for Lincoln City during the 1987/88 season, scoring in the famous win against Wycombe Wanderers to bring us back to the league. He stayed until 1990 before his move to Wales.

Now? He’s only Head of Performance at AS Roma, nothing to see here.

Nicky Platnauer

Cup Winners’ Cup (1988/89)

Nicky Platnauer took part in European competition with Cardiff City during the 1988/89 Cup Winners’ Cup campaign. Although Cardiff were knocked out by Derry City in the first round, Platnauer featured in both legs, bringing top flight experience to a side that had qualified by winning the Welsh Cup.

Earlier in his career, Platnauer had spent time at clubs such as Luton Town and Birmingham City, and he later played briefly for Lincoln City in the mid-nineties. While his stint at Sincil Bank was short, he stands among the small (well, not so small, apparently) number of former Imps to have experienced European football.
