Stacey West End of Season Awards 2023/24

Jack Mulhall xG Award – Jack Moylan +2.78

This award is given to the player who has scored more goals than xG suggests he has. Jack Mulhall loves a bit of xG, but a special mention to my mate Pete ‘It’s Not a Stat’ Summers, who will doubtless have something to say. Basically, if a player has an expected goals (xG) of 3.14, and he actually scores four, he’s outperformed his xG and is therefore in line for the award.

Joe Taylor (10 goals, 8.6 xG), Ethan Erhahon (two goals, 0.54 xG) and Reeco Hackett (eight goals, 6.04 xG) were the three players behind our winner.

Jack Moylan scored four for City (it could have been five, having that one snatched from his toe at Barnsley), but his xG suggested he should have scored 1.22, so between one and two. His sensational strike at Barnsley doubtless contributed, and for a moment there in March, it looked like everything the young lad touched was going to turn to gold.

What’s really odd is that one of the worst performers this season was Ted, with four goals but 5.8 xG. Last year, he won the award!
