Shots, Headers, Duels and Passes – The Imps’ 2019/20 broken down and analysed

Shooting

Before you go down and look at the table, I haven’t made these numbers up. You too can view them if you pay a £20 subscription to Wyscout and just because they go against what you believe to be true, doesn’t make them rubbish. I saw the miss against Ipswich like everyone else did but facts are facts; John Akinde is our most accurate striker.

There are a couple of things to consider here. I’ve not used the actual percentage figures because players with few shots were featuring; Michael Bostwick for instance with a very low shot count. Instead, I’ve found actual shots on target per game. Now, this doesn’t make good reading because there isn’t a single player who averages a single shot on target per game. We know shooting is our main problem and looking at this it’s clear we need to be more accurate.

That doesn’t take away from the fact big John is top though, does it? He may have bagged a couple of penalties, but remember Tyler has had a couple too and they were shots on target.

Jack Payne’s inclusion in the top chart shows he’s more likely to rattle a shot off but see it go wide or high, something he needs to work one. Whilst it’s been easy to lump him in with Jorge Grant, the latter’s problem is different; his accuracy isn’t bad, but he’s far too reticent when deciding to shoot. They need to be doing different drills, one on accuracy and the other on having more bloody shots!

Bruno is obviously not scared to have a pop and he’s been the one really driving the efforts in recent weeks. He can play as a nine as well and perhaps, just perhaps it is time to see him down the middle with Harry and Jorge Grant out wide. At the very least, he’d be a useful replacement for Tyler Walker in the latter stages, but only if we didn’t need his guile out wide. If only we could clone Bruno (and give him a new deal…).

Jake Hesketh’s promise shines through here as well; he’s not played many games but as he settles into the side I can see good things on the horizon for him. However, with his loan only a short-term one, he might just settle before being snatched away from us, which would be gutting.

  1. Pass rate … Mist of Jason Shackells’ passes are to his fellow centre back, so would be interesting to see results if they were taken out?
