Shay McCartan

I’ve been looking forward to this, because McCartan is perhaps my favourite Imps player at the moment, tied with one beginning with ‘A’….
What I love about the Irishman is his constant drive to get forward, carrying the ball or with the runs he makes. When Shay picks it up I expect things to happen, a pass or a drive at goal. He’s shown he can score, perhaps not quite enough as yet, but his endeavour and hard work has been pivotal in our ascent of the division.
Sometimes I see flashes of Gazza in him, not in overall ability I wouldn’t be so crass as to compare fourth division players with the most skilful player ever to wear a Boston shirt, but in the way he plays. Bullish, direct and with a hint of confidence that puts defenders off.
then I see some of Wayne Rooney in him, a bit of power in his upper body and of course, a penchant for a finish. That strike against MK Dons could have gone anywhere, but it smashed the back of the net to get us level.
We must keep him in January. He’s a top player.
Best Moment
He’s been excellent all season, bar Colchester. I liked him on the opening day, but he was exceptional at Macclesfield too. Can’t go anywhere else than MK Dons though, his goal and all-round performance was simply excellent.
Didn’t think O’Connor could play on Tuesday because of his red card against Mansfailed?
He can’t
Do tend to worry about Matt.In my view he should be playing.
Shay is clearly a talented footballer however his performances have in general been good without being exceptional. I always say that good players need good players around them. Expect to see one or two significant signings in January that may well enable him to take his performances to new level.
