Three big winners and three slight losers from our 6-2 thrashing of Port Vale

Winner: James Wilson

James Wilson is one of the unlucky ones who got injured at the wrong time last season and has been kept out of the side by other player’s on form. He might have had a shout for partnering Shackell if our midfield wasn’t so strong. He might have a spot at right back too, but Neal Eardley has that sewn up.

This weekend he played a bit of the game in midfield and once again show how adaptive he is. I like Wilson, his attitude is spot on and he’s clearly accustomed to playing football at a good level. His goal was superb too, perhaps the best of the bunch from set plays for us. His looping header from distance gave the keeper no chance.

There’s another string to his bow now and although he’s struggling to get a game, whenever he does he looks impressive.

Loser: Michael O’Connor

O’Connor has been excellent whenever he’s stepped into the fray this season, but there’s always a question over his fitness. He’s going to be a two games in, one game out type of player but when your one game out is a 6-2 away win, it leaves you looking on maybe feeling dejected.

Tom Pett is quickly becoming our number one central midfielder and Lee Frecklington as captain will always get a game. Watching on from the stands during a rout such as this must have been tough, even if it is all about the team. Both Wilson and Ellis Chapman looked good when they came on, Ellis impressing in his ten minutes or so with some nice through balls.

With competition for places stronger than ever, Michael O’Connor won’t have wanted to miss out, even if the three points delighted everyone.
