League One Latest: Former Premier League Winger Makes Port Vale Switch, Exeter City Bracing For Managerial Change

Gary Caldwell emerges as a reported front-runner for Wigan vacancy

Exeter City boss Gary Caldwell has been reported as the front-runner to take over at Wigan Athletic following Ryan Lowe’s exit, as the Latics look for a reset in the relegation fight.

Caldwell has strong previous ties to Wigan, having captained the club during a five-year spell between 2010 and 2015. He has been in management since 2022 and signed a contract extension with Exeter in 2024, with the League One side keen to retain him as part of their long-term plans.

Wigan currently find themselves in the relegation zone after a run of seven league games without a win, although they remain within touching distance of safety, sitting just two points adrift of 17th-placed Blackpool with a game in hand.

Whether Exeter would allow Caldwell to leave at this stage of the season remains unclear, but Wigan are reported to be hopeful of securing an appointment quickly as they look to arrest their slide and stabilise their campaign.

Also, they face Cardiff City in a week or two, which could have a big impact on our title ambitions. Imagine, us having title ambitions!
