Peterborough take cautious approach with Garbett, Adebisi suffers another setback

Peterborough United are set to take a safety-first approach with midfielder Matt Garbett after a foot issue, while Rio Adebisi has suffered another injury setback in his recovery.

Garbett was a surprise absentee from Saturday’s 6-1 win over Wigan Athletic and was later seen wearing a protective boot after picking up a foot injury. Speaking after the game, manager Luke Williams confirmed the club are unwilling to rush the 23-year-old back into action.

“Matt’s problem needs protection and constant monitoring,” Williams said. “It’s a minor injury that could become a major one if we don’t look after it. We also want to send him to the World Cup in the best possible shape, although believe me he would play now if he could.”

Williams added that the club believe patience will pay off. “We will take no risks and we will monitor him until we see the key markers are improving. I’m very confident by taking this action we will see a relatively swift return. I’m in no doubt it’s the right course of action.”

There was less positive news regarding left-back Rio Adebisi, who has suffered another setback in his long recovery from injury. Williams praised the defender’s attitude despite the latest blow.

“Rio is an inspiration,” he said. “He has had another setback, but he has such a strong mind and work ethic and he remains so positive around the rest of the group. I’d hate to come up against him when he does get back on the pitch as he’s going to be so fired up.”
