Stamford Keep Survival Hopes Alive With Thrilling Win

Stamford kept their hopes of survival alive with a vital home victory over fellow strugglers AFC Sudbury, edging a dramatic contest 3-2 in a match that swung repeatedly in the second half.

The win follows Saturday’s important away success and continues a more positive run of results during the latter part of January.

After picking up three points on the road at the weekend, Stamford returned home knowing this was another fixture carrying significant weight at the foot of the table. With both sides locked in a relegation battle, the importance of the occasion was evident from the opening exchanges, with neither team prepared to concede an early advantage.

Stamford settled well and gradually began to impose themselves, enjoying more of the ball as the first half wore on. That control was rewarded on the half-hour mark when they found the breakthrough, taking the lead in the 30th minute through Leon Lobjoit. It was a goal that brought a lift to the home support and gave Stamford something tangible to protect going into the interval, which they managed successfully as the first half closed with the hosts 1-0 ahead.

The game changed complexion almost immediately after the restart. AFC Sudbury emerged with greater intent and the match opened up considerably, with space appearing at both ends. That shift in momentum told just after the hour when Sudbury struck twice in the space of a minute, Marcel Lewis and Callum Page suddenly turning a Stamford lead into a 2-1 deficit and threatening to undo the home side’s recent progress.

To Stamford’s credit, heads did not drop. Instead, they responded with renewed urgency, pushing numbers forward and asking questions of the Sudbury defence. That pressure paid off in the 66th minute when Stamford found an equaliser, restoring parity and reigniting belief around the ground through Jack Duffy.

With confidence growing, Stamford continued to press and were rewarded again six minutes later. In the 72nd minute, they regained the lead with Lobjoit’s second, completing a remarkable turnaround in a contest that had swung sharply against them only moments earlier. The final stages were tense, with Sudbury pushing for a way back into the game, but Stamford defended resolutely to see out the win and secure three points that could prove crucial in the weeks ahead.

While there is still plenty of work to be done, this result adds to a much-improved second half of January and offers hope that Stamford can build momentum in their fight to escape the relegation places.

Elsewhere, there was Lincolnshire Cup action involving Boston Town and Grantham Town. In a competitive and hard-fought tie, Boston were reduced to 10 men in the 41st minute, a setback that ultimately proved decisive. Grantham made their advantage count in the 74th minute when Langford produced a stunning strike to settle the contest, his effort the only goal of the game in a spirited local encounter.
