Lincoln City Will Be Signing a Striker, After All

It seems the Imps will be signing a striker this transfer window, with news that Justin Obikwu has been recalled by Coventry City.

The 21-year-old made 21 appearances for the Imps in all competitions after joining on loan, scoring three goals, including one on his home debut against Luton Town.

The Imps will now enter the transfer market looking for a replacement, which goes against the previous plan for this January. Jez George admitted this was a curveball that was ‘completely unexpected’.

“Coventry had indicated to us earlier in the window that they were happy for Justin to stay with us for the remainder of the season, but their circumstances have changed in the last 48 hours and we were informed of their desire to recall Justin on Thursday afternoon.

“The January transfer window always throws curveballs and whilst this was completely unexpected, it is part of football. We are now working hard to identify all available and affordable options in the market that fit our game model to replace Justin, as well as the ongoing process of trying to strengthen the squad as Michael alluded to this week. As in August, it is important that we make the right decisions for the next four months and not just the next four games.”

The Imps press release added

“Everyone at City thanks  Justin for his contribution during his time with the Imps.”

While this is a blow for City, it’s worth pointing out it’s not like Leo Castledine leaving Huddersfield, or Jamie McDonnell leaving Mansfield. They were key players for their side, and while Obikwu added depth, he never looked capable of leading the line from the off.

I know the club believed he had a unique attribute set, but I often likened him to Ollie Palme,r and I never made a secret of what I felt about him. When a player is so unpredictable that he doesn’t know what he’s going to do, then, for me, he is nothing more than a squad member, rather than a key player.
