Gainsborough Trinity have confirmed the departure of defender Will Lancaster to AFC Fylde for a club record transfer fee.
The 23-year-old leaves after a standout spell at the Northolme, having made more than fifty appearances last season and featuring in every league game this campaign. Lancaster collected multiple end-of-season awards during his time with Trinity and had established himself as a key figure in Russ Wilcox’s side.
The club rejected three earlier bids for the former Barnsley academy graduate, but a significantly increased fourth offer from Fylde prompted renewed discussions. With Lancaster making clear his desire to move into full-time football and test himself higher up the pyramid, the board agreed to sanction the transfer.

In a statement, Trinity reaffirmed their commitment to developing players and supporting their progression, noting that they would not stand in the way of individuals seeking to advance their careers. Lancaster’s decision to activate the option on his contract in the summer ensured the club were able to command a substantial fee rather than risk losing him for nothing next year.
Lancaster began his career at hometown club Barnsley, captaining the under-21s and making his senior debut in the EFL Trophy in 2022. Loan spells at Whitby Town and Bradford Park Avenue provided senior experience before his move to Gainsborough.
Trinity will now look to strengthen ahead of a busy December schedule after Saturday’s home fixture with Hyde United was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. They drew 1-1 with Morpeth Town last night and face Warrington Town at the weekend.
