Cobblers Chairman Warns of Deepening Financial Crisis
Kelvin Thomas says EFL finances have become a “disaster” as Northampton prepare to post another year of losses.
Cobblers reported losses of more than £2 million in their last accounts and expect that figure to rise again. Rising costs, inflation and widening gaps between divisions continue to pressure budgets across the league. Thomas underlined the scale of the challenge:
“Football finances are a mess. There’s no hiding from the fact that it now costs a lot more money to be pretty much in the same place. That’s the reality of the situation and as owners we recognise we have to spend that money just to compete.
“We’re losing £2.5 million on an annual basis and that’s just purely down to inflation and how much costs have gone up. We’re further away from the top three now than 10 years ago but we’re still losing £2.5 million
Despite the financial strain, Northampton remain competitive in League One, though the chairman reinforced the need for stronger cost controls and regulatory safeguards.
