Number 24 on our list is a name a little less familiar to younger fans than yesterday’s.

Before we go on, this is a list of the most prolific Lincoln City strikers from 1945 onwards.

We’ve already had Gary Taylor Fletcher at 25, so let’s see who is at 24.

#24 – Alan Morton (0.34)

Alan Morton probably isn’t a name that has crossed Imps’ fans’ lips for a few years, but his record of 20 goals in 58 appearances makes him one of the most prolific players since the war.

Morton was born in Peterborough and began his football career with Arsenal. He never played for the Gunners’ first team, instead returning home to Posh. That’s where he made his debut in the 1961–62 Football League season, later moving to Sincil Bank.

He came to us at a bad time. We’d slipped to back-to-back relegations, and in our first Division Four campaign, we were forced to apply for re-election. It was successful, but it was as close to three relegations as you could get.

He joined us after a spell with Wisbech Town at the start of the 1963/64 season, and he impressed immediately, with a brace on his debut against Southport. He was a streaky player, bagging 18 in his first season to finish as top scorer in the league. A third of those goals came in two matches, with hat tricks against Bradford Park Avenue and Barrow, both 3-0 wins.

We finished 11th, a brief upturn given the poor form of the previous three seasons, and Morton was the club’s top scorer with 21 goals in all competitions.

He played only infrequently the following season, scoring just twice in 14 outings, both in a 6-0 demolition of Stockport County. At the end of the season, he moved to Chesterfield, later appearing for Spalding and Boston FC, before winding up his career with non-league Lincoln Claytons.

Alan passed away in Lincoln, where he’d made his home, in 2021.
