Popular Former Imp Makes Move Into Dugout – Huge FA Cup Tie His First Game

Former City defender Michael Bostwick has stepped into management this week, and he faces a huge task as his first official engagement.

St Albans’ Director of Football Harry Wheeler has confirmed that Bostwick has been appointed Player-Interim Manager following the departure of Ian Culverhouse, who left Clarence Park earlier this week. The 37-year-old will be assisted by the club’s existing backroom team and takes charge immediately.

It’s a big first test for Bozzy, as his managerial debut comes in the FA Cup First Round this Saturday, and it’s against one of his former sides, Burton Albion.

The tie at the Pirelli Stadium offers a typical cup narrative: a club in flux, led by a warrior familiar to Imps fans, heading into one of the competition’s most unpredictable weekends against a former club. The headlines are written already!

From Warrior to Leader

Bostwick’s leadership qualities were never in doubt during his time with the Imps, where he made over 100 appearances between 2017 and 2020, playing a crucial role in the League Two title-winning campaign under Danny Cowley. His experience, composure, and commanding presence in midfield and defence made him a fan favourite at Sincil Bank, and it’s those same traits that St Albans now need in the dugout.

However, his first game in charge comes under difficult circumstances. Reports suggest that Bostwick is battling a hamstring injury picked up during the FA Trophy defeat to Hanwell Town, leaving him a doubt to feature on the pitch.

That would be a blow for a side already stretched by fitness concerns, with Zane Banton, Alex Wall, and James Sweet also nursing knocks.

Big Challenge, Bigger Opportunity

Culverhouse’s sudden exit, along with assistant Paul Bastock, has rocked the Saints just days before their biggest fixture of the season. Bostwick worked with the duo at Boston, but he’s now flying solo in his first managerial role.

The trip to Burton adds extra intrigue. Albion, managed by Gary Bowyer, have struggled near the foot of League One this season but picked up a much-needed 1-0 win at AFC Wimbledon last weekend, lifting them to 20th in the table. With £45,000 in prize money awaiting the winners and £15,000 for the losers, the stakes could hardly be higher for both clubs.

It’s been a remarkable run for St Albans so far – this is their fifth consecutive away tie in this year’s competition, having already travelled to Aylesbury Vale, Hitchin Town, Woodford Town, and Banbury.
