The 2025–26 Sky Bet League One season is starting to take shape and we already have a familiar look to the top six who feature some promotion favourites and dark horses.

Bradford City

Bradford City are strong title contenders thanks to their tight defence and goal threat. Their summer recruitment has been smart; experienced here, and youth there and the team has found a nice rhythm at home and away.

As it stands, Bradford is well placed for automatic promotion according to expert soccer predictions provided they remain injury-free and maintain their defensive record over the winter stretch.

The three things that matter are defensive discipline, the fitness of the first-choice striker, and turning draws into wins away from home.

Cardiff City

Cardiff City dropped down from the Championship and started the season as the favourites to go straight back up and early signs support that optimism. Due to their finances and squad depth the club has a natural advantage when injuries or fixture pile-up hits.

Nonetheless, teams that drop down tend to suffer an impact on the psychological side. Cardiff cannot switch off like they did against lower opposition. If they can balance being aggressive and being careful, they have a real shot at top-two.

To do so, they’ll need group harmony and steady midfield control.

Stevenage

The team’s strength is built on structure and organisation and this season is no different. They are hard to break down and dangerous from set pieces and counterattacks. They might not win style points, but tactical football wins results for the coach.

Their challenge will be depth. Injuries and suspensions can quickly take their toll on a smaller squad over a 46-match season. If Stevenage maintains their structural integrity and keep mashing out narrow victories, they are well within playoff range with a glimmer of hope of sneaking into the automatic promotion spots.

Stockport County

Stockport County have displayed attacking flair and ambition since returning to the third tier. As one of the league’s better sides, their attacking statistics paint a positive picture. However, their form has been inconsistent.

If Stockport can be more efficient with their chances and maintain belief during dips in form, the club will be a strong play-off candidate. They can be a dangerous team if they take the game to you with their high-tempo approach, especially at home. However, against the best, they will need to combine that approach with more defensive control.

Bolton Wanderers

Bolton Wanderers are one of the biggest clubs in the division in stature and expectation. In recent years, they have been close to being promoted, but have folded under pressure. With the experience and technical quality they possess, the team would have had a fine foundation. However, their inconsistency against lesser teams is holding them back.

If Bolton can avoid injury and click in the middle third of the season, they have the tools to challenge for an automatic promotion. Otherwise, a playoff campaign for them is in the works but this time things might finally change.

Lincoln City

Lincoln City might not have as much money as some of their opponents. But they are a unit with discipline. They’re known as a hard team to play against because their defensive record is one of the best in the league.

The chances of being promoted will depend on whether they can add more creativity and goals to back up their defence. Lincoln City are excellent at set-pieces which gives them the edge in close games. If they can keep it up, a top-six finish is on the cards.

Reading the table: Form, fixtures, and fine margins

The 46-game season in League One rewards consistently better than brilliance. Often, form tables will swing through winter and the clubs with plenty of depth will start to rise as injuries and suspensions pile-up.

At this stage.

  • Bradford City or Cardiff City, both look well balanced, most likely to pick up the automatic promotion (top two).
  • There’s still a lot to play for, with four clubs: Stevenage, Stockport, Bolton and Lincoln going for 3rd to 6th, depending on momentum.

Bottom line

Bradford City and Cardiff City look the best bets for automatic promotion at this stage after showing a strong squad, consistency, and leadership. Stevenage, Stockport, Bolton and Lincoln seem to possess the qualities needed to put in a challenge but all have familiar weaknesses; depth, inconsistency or lack of goals.

There is still a long way to go in this season but the race for promotion in League One is one of the closest in football. Expect many surprises before May confirms who is celebrating a promotion to the Championship.
