Cardiff City: Robertson’s Ongoing Absence Raises Questions

Cardiff City midfielder Alex Robertson’s wait for competitive action continues after travelling 10,000 miles for international duty without featuring for Australia.

The 22-year-old, on loan from Manchester City, was called up by Socceroos boss Tony Popovic but remained unused for friendlies against Canada and the United States. Popovic later hinted at uncertainty over the player’s situation at club level, saying he wanted to “understand it a little bit better” before future selections.

“Alexander has made himself available for the Socceroos, he wants to play for Australia,” said Popovic. “It’s a chance to see his current level and we hope he gets football, which would help his World Cup chances.”

Robertson has not played since sustaining a leg injury in pre-season against Notts County. Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy confirmed the midfielder is now pain-free and training fully, but insisted he must raise his intensity to break into a midfield containing Ryan Wintle, David Turnbull, Joel Colwill and Dakarai Mafico.

“He’s fit and ready to compete, but he still has to reach that standard,” Barry-Murphy said.

Despite his talent and international pedigree, Robertson remains on the periphery, with his immediate focus on convincing Cardiff’s staff he is ready for selection.
