Predicted Lincoln City Starting XI Against Burton Albion

Credit Graham Burrell

With two suspensions and a possible injury doubt, Lincoln City’s starting line-up will see changes when they take to the pitch this weekend.

After three consecutive league draws, the Imps must tweak their side, with Rob Street and Ryley Towler both unavailable. With Tom Bayliss having come off at the weekend, there could be a question mark over his fitness also.

With that in mind, what XI would I pick for the weekend?

Goalkeeper and Defence

There’s no question between the sticks. George Wickens has been excellent, aside from one moment of hesitation last weekend, and continues as number one. At right-back, captain Tendayi Darikwa keeps his place. His drive and energy are invaluable, particularly away from home, where his forward bursts can drag City up the field.

On the left, suspension forces a change, and new signing Adam Reach is in line for his first league start. Reach looked composed on his debut and offers a steady, experienced option.

With Towler banned, Sonny Bradley returns from his own suspension to partner Tom Hamer. The duo bring leadership, strength, and defensive stability, with Hamer’s consistent reliability making him one of the unsung performers of the season so far.

Midfield

In midfield, Conor McGrandles remains a first-choice pick. Now beyond 150 appearances for the Imps, he offers security and composure in possession.

Alongside him, provided he shakes off last weekend’s knock, Tom Bayliss continues. His set-piece delivery has been a vital weapon, while his ball-carrying ability gives City forward momentum.

Should Bayliss fail to make it, Ivan Varfolomieiev could step in, but if fit, Bayliss starts.

Attack

The wide positions will see change. On the left, Reeco Hackett starts despite a quieter showing last time out. His creativity and ability to beat a man make him indispensable.

On the opposite flank, with Street suspended, youngster Oscar Thorn gets the nod for me . He has impressed in cameos, showing pace, energy, and the bravery to take on defenders – exactly what’s needed to stretch the opposition.

Behind the striker, Freddie Draper has earned his chance to make the number 10 role his own. His hold-up play, mobility and goalscoring threat have been vital since Jack Moylan’s injury.

Leading the line, there is no debate. Veteran striker James Collins, already past the 200-goal mark, will spearhead the attack. His experience, movement, and finishing make him undroppable.

The Lincoln City XI in Full

Wickens, Darikwa, Hamer, Bradley, Reach, McGrandles, Bayliss, Hackett, Draper, Thorn, Collins.

Conclusion

Suspensions force adjustments, but the balance of this XI looks strong, a testament to the depth in the squad.

The big calls are at left back and right wing. Reach’s timing as a signing couldn’t be better, while Thorn’s inclusion rewards his lively cameos. Draper and Collins up front provide power and goals, with McGrandles and Bayliss steadying the midfield.

It’s a side built to compete, but also one with youth and energy in key attacking roles.
