The Former Imps Who Missed Out On European Football

Oxford United Milk Cup keeper Alan Judge to speak at Manor Club | Oxford Mail

Alan Judge (1986/87 UEFA Cup, Oxford United)

Goalkeeper Alan Judge was with Oxford United during their most successful spell, helping them win the 1986 League Cup. That triumph would have earned European football in the 1986–87 UEFA Cup, but Judge never got to experience it as Oxford, like all English sides, were barred from entry due to the UEFA ban.

His Imps spell isn’t quite as famous. He played twice on loan for City from Oxford, one of those games being a 7-0 hammering against Derby. that was his last imps appearance.

Trevor Hebberd (1986/87 UEFA Cup, Oxford United, 1989/90 UEFA Cup, Derby County)

Trevor Hebberd played a pivotal role in Oxford United’s 1986 League Cup win and later starred for Derby County. He missed European competition twice—first in 1986–87 with Oxford, then again in 1989–90 with Derby—as both clubs were affected by the UEFA sanctions imposed on English teams during that period.

He came to City in 1994/95, but was miles away from the player who could have graced the pitches of Barcelona and Napoli. 25 appearances for Sam Ellis’s side are largely forgotten by anyone who saw them.

Trevor Peake (1987/88 European Cup Winners’ Cup, Coventry City)

Peake was another of Colin Murphy’s golden generation who should have appeared in Europe in the late eighties. After four seasons with City, playing as captain and almost enjoying promotion to the Second Division, he was sold to Coventry for £100,000.

Peake was a reliable centre-back and a key figure in Coventry City’s 1987 FA Cup triumph. Ordinarily, that victory would have sent him into the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1987–88, but Coventry, like other English sides, were excluded from continental football due to the post-Heysel UEFA restrictions.
