Peterborough 1998
He begins a lesson on late surges. Ahead of our April clash with Peterborough, they led us by a single point, boasting 66 and sitting in the top seven. We were eighth on 65 points, knowing that a Posh win would make the final three games of the season very tough for us. Very tough indeed. Posh had beaten us 5-1 in the reverse fixture, a game which saw us score first, Lee Thorpe bagging after only a minute.
There’s a full article on the game here, but once again there was an early goal, Jimmy Quinn heading home for Posh. It was disallowed, and six minutes later, City led 2-0. Colin Alcide flicked one home, and Paul Smith added a second. Before half time, it was 3-0, and there was no coming back from that for Posh. It could have been five or six – Alcide lifted a shot over in the last minute.
We were third at the end of the season, and Posh finished ninth. In this instance, it really was a winner-takes-all game.
