Peterborough 2021

This one still stings. The year is 2021, and there are no fans in the stadium. Brennan Johnson and Morgan Rogers, two Premier League players right now, are strutting their stuff in Imps’ colours. Jorge Grant is roaming the field like a modern-day Peter Gain, and we’re in third, a game in hand over Posh, but in decent form. We went into the game with 12 points from 14 matches, knowing a win would pull us to within five points of them, with us having two to play.
We’d be relying on Doncaster also beating Posh on the last day, but a win would be huge for us, a real boost to our confidence. Szmodics, Clarke-Harris, Ward, and Dembele all played for Posh, as did keeper Joe Bursik. He couldn’t keep out Scully’s opener, nor Jorge Grant’s penalty on the stroke of half time. After the break, we added another, Scully again, making it 3-0. The goal difference plummeted, and we prepped for a huge game at Charlton, hoping to take the race to the season’s final day.
Ethan Hamilton came on for the hosts and inspired a comeback. They scored on 65 minutes, then again on 75. City battled valiantly, and it looked like going down to the wire. Sadly, the only thing going down was Sammy Szmodics, diving. John Busby was fooled, and Posh took a point, and promotion.
