Bristol Live reported our interest in Brandon Hanlan back in August 2021, suggesting we’d placed a bid for the former Gillingham striker. It wasn’t successful, Joey Barton’s Bristol Rovers rejected it, and Wycombe swooped in and took him from under our noses. Oddly, despite Rovers rejecting the bid from us, Joey Barton claimed the player ‘couldn’t hit a cow’s arse with a banjo‘ whilst playing for The Gas.
Hanlan was a player we’d be turning to for goals, but that’s not what he’s delivered for Wycombe. He’s hit nine in two seasons in League One, from 60 outings, 11 in 69, including cup fixtures.
Trai Hume
I always think of the Sunderland man as the one that got away. Whilst Trai Hume was linked with us courtesy of the Belfast Telegraph, the interest went much deeper. I understand he had been to the training ground and was so close to signing for City. A club insider told me it pains them, even today, to know how close we came to a quality player.
Hume signed for Sunderland on a four-and-a-half-year deal and edged his way into their first team setup in his first few months. He became a regular in their Championship side, and earned international honours as he grew in stature. The former Linfield man is now a key figure for the Black Cats, recently penning a deal until 2027.
