100 Games Of Michael Appleton: My Top Five Matches

Lincoln 2-1 Peterborough

I have to start on the first day of 2020, with the visit of Posh. Of course, we could have talked about the 2-0 win against Sunderland, Michael’s first home league win, or the 5-3 hammering of Ipswich, but for me, this was the highlight of the opening months of Michael’s reign. It wasn’t just the fact we won the game, but the style in which we won it. Peterborough had a strong side, and pound for pound they were the better team. However, we seemed to raise our game for those matches, and this was no exception.

Of course, there was the drama that elevated this above the norm. Dembele’s red card and our late goal made it more than just a match, it was an occasion to savour, and coming off the back of the Ipswich win in renewed confidence and belief in the Imps side. It was also the final game of the Cowley team really, Michael started to recruit his own players and some fan favourites were bowing out.

As well as that, this was the first time we saw real emotion from Michael. When the final goal went in, he leapt onto the field and celebrated as if he’d scored it. It was a magical moment that I feel help cement his relationship with those fans who were wavering in the early stages of his tenure.
