The Man in the Middle: Ipswich

We’re on the cusp of Terrific Tuesday in the League One promotion race – three games in which six of the top eight meet each other.

How these results go could determine a lot over the next 14 games or so. Hull need to build up their lead, Peterborough won’t want to have been top and now fall out of the top three and we want to move further away from our perceived blip. That means doing something we haven’t done since 1954 – win away at Ipswich.

We’ve seen some cracking games there recently, the FA Cup match of 2017 and the subsequent FA Cup tie we should have won in 2019. Will we finally get that win we need, pushing towards the promised land of the Championship? We may, we may not, but the man in the middle could be hugely important tomorrow.

Referee: James Oldham,
Assistant Referee: Michael Webb, John Flynn
Fourth Official: Garry Maskell

I had to chuckle when I checked the listing this morning because yesterday I was reading up on our 5-3 win against Ipswich last season, and guess who was the referee? Yup, James Oldham. Is that an omen? I’d take the same again, all day long!

Oldham is a relatively new official on the scene, having graduated from the National League last season. That win against the Tractor Boys was the only league game he has officiated for us, but he has looked after two EFL trophy matches, our 3-0 victory against Rotherham last season, and the 1-1 draw with Scunthorpe this time out. He has also been the fourth official at the Bank this season, controlling the touchlines as we drew 2-2 with Accrington.
