‘Meet your player of the season’ – These Leeds fans react to midfielder’s departure

The Imps landed midfielder Robbie Gotts on loan from Leeds United yesterday and I’m afraid I missed the boat a little.

For those who follow me on Twitter, I’ve not been well the last 24 hours or so and ended up in bed by 4 pm yesterday. That meant I missed the press release, which had Michael Appleton enthusing about his new capture.

“Robbie’s very versatile in terms of his ability to play in midfield or at full-back. He’s got bags of quality in possession of the ball and he’s got the energy and athleticism to get up and down the pitch too,” he said.

“Overall though he’s just another really good addition and the fact that it’s his first loan away quite excites me too because he’s desperate to impress and desperate to impress his new teammates as well.”

Gotts is a central midfielder primarily and Michael isn’t the only gaffer to be waxing lyrical about his attributes. He was once described by Marcelo Bielsa, who put Leeds back in the Premier League last season, as the most “dynamic” player he had ever seen.

“He’s a number eight,” Bielsa said in November 2019. “A midfielder, he is not offensive and not defensive, he’s a number eight. I have never seen a player play with such a dynamic. He’s a player with skills.

“He showed he deserved to play in the first team. I wish he would play with the first team soon, but he competes with players with a high level.”

It’s all good managers and coaches raving about a player, but what about the supporters? They are the most critical group when it comes to assessing a player’s ability and it is likely, certainly in the case of a huge club like Leeds, that many of them have seen the youngster in action for the Under 23s.
