Thanks, No Thanks – Gillingham

Thanks – Aaron Brown

Time for debate. I know the omission of the word ‘no’ in the title of this page will cause some to sigh because Aaron Brown represents something more than a simple signing from Gillingham. He was one of Peter Jackson’s Magnificent Seven and will forever be lumped in with the likes of Kevin Gall.

It was the summer of 2008 when Brown joined the side. He had the right sort of experience having served Bristol City and Swindon well in a solid career, but he joined us from Gillingham. He came in as a left back but he was much more attack focused than he was defensively minded. He was quick and could get up and down the line but during his City tenure he was often found wanting in his defensive duties.

He made his Imps debut in the opening day 1-0 defeat at Rotherham and went on to make 41 appearances in his first season. When Peter Jackson was sacked the following season Brown fell out of favour and was loaned to Burton Albion by Chris Sutton. He returned briefly to score in the 3-1 FA Cup win at Telford before his contract was terminated by mutual consent in February 2010.

I for one was sad to see Brown leave as I think as a wide midfield player he had a lot to offer at League Two level. He signed for relegated Wrexham in the Blue Square Premier and then moved on to Darlington. He featured for Darlington in a return to Sincil Bank as the Imps ran out 5-0 winners.

  1. Josh Howling was a real cultured centre half we should have kept. Without him we would have been in the blue Square north.
    Talented player.
