Five Keith-era players that would suit the Cowley method perfectly

Steve Robinson

There will be some amongst you who are scratching your heads now. Some might wonder who on earth Steve Robinson is. Others might ask how I could possibly believe that a player who appeared in just 12 matches could possibly be better for Danny than for Keith.

Maybe there’s a hint of a cheat here, but I think Steve Robinson would benefit from the 14-year advance in medical science, because when he signed for us as a 29-year old, he should have had lots of time left in his career. He injured his foot in pre season and never managed to regain the fitness he needed for professional football.

We lost out back then, but having seen how Danny nurses the likes of Freck, carefully managing loads and ensuring we get the most out of them, he would have surely been able to squeeze more out of the player affectionately nicknamed ‘turbo’ by his Swindon team mates. If he had, we’d have a player very much in the Alex Woodyard mould, with the benefit of experience.

He would never have even been available to us had a broken fibula not ruled him out for almost a season at Swindon, so injuries very much define the player we got and how he was when he was with us. Not only could we get more from him now, but when he played he was just the man to play that roving role that Woody played so well.

They called him turbo because he seemed to constantly being turbo-ing about in the middle of the park, pressing and harassing, winning balls and starting moves. That type of player was only ever going to get so far in Keith’s side, but with Danny that is part of how we start our attacks, win the ball and then play it to someone who can hit Rheady on the diagonal. There’s little doubt in my mind, Steve Robinson would have been a wonderful player for Danny Cowley.

Coming soon: Four Danny Cowley era players who would have fared far better under Keith Alexander

  1. Hi Gary,
A good read as always, but what I wanted to day was not that, but that anyone who gives you even a word of grief for being ‘commercial’ or whatever rubbish it is they come out with, they want their little minds checking. I bet they’re the same as the rest of us – regularly checking your website hoping for a new article. They’re probably doing it on the bog at work, getting paid even as they read. Meanwhile they expect you to be entertaining them for nothing because ‘you enjoy it’ (or whatever nut-job argument it is they come up with). On behalf of the silent majority – thank you for everything and don’t let the b*ggers get you down!

  2. How about an “If only they had signed” article? I remember wishing we could afford John Cornforth. OConnor, Ellison etc etc
