Stacey West XI – Midfielders Vote

Glenn Cockerill in the top flight
So, there you have it. Fifteen midfielders, nominated by you . I can already see the Facebook post from Ian Dovey asking where his favourite midfielder from the 1950s is and rest assured at some point soon were going to run a few features on the stars even your Dad struggles to recall.

Here and now though, we need two midfielders for our XI and two for the reserves XI as well. With that in mind, you can pick up to THREE players who get your vote. That way we’ll hopefully get a wider spread of players and a fairer outcome. After all, everyone over the age of 40 wants to pick Glenn Cockerill, that goes without saying, but at least this way you get more of a say in who partners him!

  1. What, no Dick Neal? The only Lincoln player ever to play for England above youth level, 156 appearances for the Imps (mostly in the second tier) and almost ever-present in the great 1955-56 side which missed promotion to the top flight by just 6 points. Likened by some to the late lamented Duncan Edwards.

  2. There is absolutely no doubt that Dave Smith will be in. the team. Don’t even think about it kiddies. As you say these days “It’s a no brainer!”

  3. For those of a certain vintage, the pic under Dennis Booth doesn’t include dear old ‘ratter’ (winning diving header v Stoke fused into memory banks) but does include (with champagne bottle, natch) the finest midfielder I’ve seen play for the Imps, ie Dave Smith. Ran the title side and against Div 1 and Div 2 sides in cup ties before being taken out when you could stay on the pitch for so doing.

Given that Shippo ( a great left winger) is here under cental midfield, and with the hints in the last page, Smudger will be in that category. He looked ready to play if needed before the Macc game last year, btw.

Still think he was one of our 2 finest CM’s though (his beard alongside Cockerill’s mullet), Taylor’s masterstroke.

Great idea but our eras are on display!!
